Brown
Long Eared Bat
The brown long eared bat, Plecotus
auritus, is said to be the prettiest UK bat. Its
ears are almost half the length of its body and are carefully
folded away under its wings when it it asleep.
Because
it feeds close to vegetation, its echolocation is very quiet
as it gleans moths and other insects from the foliage. It's
eyes are larger than most other bats and it has very good eyesight
but its hearing is so acute that it can hear the fluttering
of insect wings amongst the leaves. It is also able to echolocate
through its nose.
